Why the Bomb Gurgler Topwater Baby Tarpon Fly Gets Eaten

The Bomb Gurgler topwater baby tarpon fly turns a shrimp fleeing across the surface into an explosive, unmissable target. We built this pattern in the same tan and orange colorway as our Bravo Shrimp, but designed it to pop, not sink. A specially cut foam top digs into the water harder than a standard gurgler on every strip. As a result, the Bomb Gurgler topwater baby tarpon fly throws more commotion and draws more explosive strikes than a typical topwater pattern.

Every topwater angler knows commotion gets attention. In fact, we cut the foam front on this pattern specifically to break the surface faster and louder than a standard gurgler design. Therefore, this fly gets noticed the instant it hits the water — exactly what triggers baby tarpon to roll on a fly and commit.

One Fly. Two Techniques.

Beyond a standalone popper, the Bomb Gurgler comes with extra foam built in for a simple dropper rig. Additionally, tie on roughly eighteen inches of 15-pound fluorocarbon and a small bonefish fly behind it, and the Bomb Gurgler fishes like a popping cork. This is an excellent technique for beginning anglers and produces on speckled trout and other species keying on movement under commotion.

Premium Hardware: Gamakatsu SC15 1/0 Hook

We tie the Bomb Gurgler exclusively on the legendary Gamakatsu SC15 1/0 hook. This is the same trusted hardware we use across our entire lineup.

  • Sticky Sharp Point: First, the needle-sharp point drives instantly into hard, bony jaws. As a result, it requires minimal hook-set effort.
  • Optimal Shank Geometry: Next, the hook’s balance keeps the fly riding true on the surface. Therefore, it maintains a natural shrimp profile through every pop.
  • Unmatched Strength: Finally, high-carbon steel construction resists bending. It handles explosive surface strikes from baby tarpon and snook alike.

Built in Tan and Orange: Craft Fur, Cactus Chenille, and a Brush Body

We chose every material in the Bomb Gurgler to trigger a reaction, not just to look good on the vise.

  • Tan Craft Fur Tail: First, the craft fur mimics a fleeing shrimp’s profile and kicks with every strip. As a result, it looks alive even between pops.
  • Orange Cactus Chenille Hot Spot: Additionally, positioned right under the tail, it adds flash and contrast that draws attention the instant the fly hits the water.
  • Brush Body: Finally, the brushy body pushes water and adds bulk without extra weight. This keeps the fly riding high and ready to pop on the next strip.

A More Aggressive Pop: The Foam Cut That Sets It Apart

We didn’t just glue on a foam top — we engineered the cut.

  • Special Front-Cut Foam: First, we cut the foam top with a pattern designed to dig into the water faster than a standard gurgler. As a result, it throws a louder, more aggressive pop on every strip.
  • Built-In Buoyancy: Additionally, the foam keeps the fly riding high between pops, ready to go off again the instant you strip.
  • Ready for a Dropper Rig: Finally, we build extra foam into the design specifically so you can rig a dropper without sacrificing the fly’s pop.

Effortless to Cast

We designed the Bomb Gurgler with castability in mind. The fly loads a rod efficiently and delivers with accuracy, even in tight spots.

  • 7-Weight Friendly: First, it casts well on a 7 wt. fly rod. Therefore, you don’t need to overgun your setup.
  • Wind-Cutting Profile: Additionally, the compact foam head cuts through coastal breezes. It punches into tight windows without wrecking your presentation.
  • Accurate Delivery: Finally, the well-balanced design lands softly and settles naturally. This is critical when targeting wary fish in shallow water.

Target Species

The Bomb Gurgler produces on anything willing to eat on the surface:

Saltwater Predators

  • Baby Tarpon — First, this topwater baby tarpon fly draws explosive surface strikes from baby tarpon rolling and feeding in shallow, grassy backcountry.
  • Snook — Next, it also triggers eat responses from snook holding near structure and current edges.
  • Redfish — Additionally, it produces when reds turn up to eat on top, especially in calm, skinny water.
  • Speckled Trout — Finally, fished on the dropper rig, it draws speckled trout up from below to eat the popping commotion on the surface.
